Chaney Enterprises Earns Gold Level Achievement for NRCMA’s “Excellence in Safety Awards”

Chaney Enterprises announces the achievement of earning 12 top-tier Excellence in Safety Awards from the National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA).

Chaney Enterprises earned the gold level Excellence in Safety Awards at eight of their Maryland ready-mix concrete facilities including Bestgate, Bishopville, Hollywood, Mechanicsville, Owings, Sparrows Point, Upper Marlboro and Waugh Chapel. They also earned the top-tier safety award at four ready-mix plants in Virginia including their facilities in Bealeton, Gainesville, King George and Lorton. Safety Manager, Chris McCoy said, “One of the best things about our team members is that they’re always finding new ways to keep themselves and their co-workers safe on the job site and while working at company facilities. At the end of the day, we all strive to be safe at work so we can come home healthy to our families.”

Since its inception in 1996, the NRMCA Safety Contest has served as a safety performance and award program aimed to foster safe practices at ready-mixed concrete plants across the nation. The 2020 Safety Contest received 1,452 individual plant entries and awarded 975 “Excellence in Safety” awards, which is an all-time high for the program.

In November 2008, the NRMCA Safety Task Group updated the Excellence in Safety Awards program to a 3-tier system and began basing the winning facilities from the latest OSHA / Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Incident Rate available for the ready-mixed concrete industry. BLS data from January 2020 shows the ready-mixed concrete industry with an incident rate of 3.9. The 3-tiers of Excellence in Safety Awards are broken down into Gold, Silver and Bronze:

• Gold – Incident rate equal to zero

• Silver – Incident rate greater than zero and equal to or less than 1.95 (1/2 the industry average)

• Bronze – Incident rate greater than 1.95 and less than 3.9

Since the safety contest began in 1996, more than 25,000 plants have entered, and many of these entered the contest every year. Out of the 1,452 entries submitted this year, the largest category for honored plants was Gold with 918 Excellence in Safety Awards. The Silver category had only 5 Excellence in Safety Awards. The Bronze category had 52 awards.
